Ice Causes 2 TV Tower to Collapse...but not WTVD-TV equipped with SANDAMPER System

"A third tower, operated by WTVD-TV, channel 11, in the same area also was covered with thick ice Sunday morning, but remained standing.  There was no interruption in WTVD's signal...The weight of the ice caused the wires to sag and bend the towers.  When the ice dropped off the cables, the towers swayed violently and snapped."

2.    AR SNUBBER System - Guyed Broadcast Tower

The AR SNUBBER system is designed for the control of low-frequency vibration of guy wires utilized to secure tall broadcast structures. Galloping may occur during high winds associated with hurricanes and winter ice storms. In either case, the AR SNUBBER System will effectively diminish the motion of guy wires, and reduce the resulting dramatic structural loading on the tower structure.

Advantages of the AR SNUBBER System:

• Dynamic twisting action of guy wire creates aerodynamic damping

• Patented hardware custom fitted to attach to guy wire

• Non-roller system eliminates possible icing problems

• Mounting location high on guy cable allows effective control

• “Safety-Link” load system prevents guy cable tension overload

• Detailed installation instructions with custom ground anchors lay-out

• Clamping system in service with multiple utility and broadcasters

• Cost effective solution compared to other anti-galloping systems

• Vibration control system qualifies for insurance premium discount

The units are mounted along the cable at pre-selected positions from the end of the guy cable.  Multiple units may be required depending on the size and length of the guy cable.  The dampers vibrate at high frequency along with the guy cable creating an impact against the cable with each cycle of vibration, thus dissipating energy by kinetic impact against the clamp. Frequency of vibration is typically from 5 HZ to 30Hz.  The design of the device is rugged enough to resist heavy ice and hurricane force winds.
